Medicine Teaching Programme

The department of medicine comprises 5 medical wards and a 10- bed
coronary care unit. Each of the wards caters for patients with acute
general medical conditions but also have subspecialty interests in
respiratory medicine (ward 7 & 15), cardiology (ward 6),
gastroenterology (ward 4 & 17), stroke care
(ward 15) and haematology (ward 17). Acute medical admissions,
usually between 15 and 25 daily, are admitted through the Medical
Admissions Unit (MAU)
There are 12 physicians who participate in acute medical take, all
with an interest in general medicine each with a special interest in
respiratory (3), gastroenterology & hepatology (4), cardiology (3),
endocrinology (1) and care of the elderly medicine (2). There are
also consultants in haematology (2),
rheumatology and genitourinary medicine.
The department works from a ward-based system in three teams. Each
team has 3 F1 trainees, 3 SHO’s/F2, 1 Clinical Fellow SHO grade and
3 middle grades. Four specialist GPStR’s are among the middle grades
supporting 1 associate specialist and 4 staff grade doctors. Juniors
work a full shift system, which is New Deal compliant.
There are 2 VTS trainees at SHO grade. The department offers a wide
variety of experience in clinical medicine both acute and at
outpatients. Our education program fulfils training requirements and
allows half-day educational release for VTS trainees.
